How to create a family with nested components in Revit?
Before clarifying how to create a family with nested components I think it is important for readers to understand in the first place the reason behind doing so. That means why are families even created with nested components? Well family creation definitely requires a lot of time and technical expertise but if design professionals wants to save their time they can go for developing a family with nested components. That means this process is adopted by AEC professionals for developing families promptly in Revit.
When families are created with nested components Revit users insert or nest a family within an existing Revit family to develop a new family. This process is undertaken so that they don’t have to model a family from the scratch. When families are nested within existing families they contain integrated geometry. If a shared family is nested by users they have the convenience of tagging, selecting and scheduling the components independently. However, if an unshared family is nested by users then the components developed by nested family behave as a single unite in context of rest of the elements. This eventually means component created by nested family in this case cannot be selected, tagged and scheduled independently.
Process of creating a family with nested components in Revit
- In this case when users want to create a new family simply by nesting a family within an already available one, users are required to open the existing family at the first place.
- So users must open a relevant family into which they want to nest another family for the purpose of developing a new family.
- For example for creating a combination light family, Revit users simply have to nest a light bulb into a into a light fixture family. In this case Revit users can refrain themselves from modeling a family from the scratch.
- Once a relevant family is opened by users they are then required to click ‘Insert tab’ in Family Editor, then select ‘Load from Library panel’ and they should finally select ‘Load family.’
- Once families are selected by users which they want to nest into another family they should then click ‘Open.’
- After that click ‘Create tab’ then ‘Model panel’ and finally ‘Component.’
- Now users are required to select component type that they would be nesting in the family.
- For this they are required to approach ‘Type Selector’ and then chose relevant component.
- For placing nested component in the family users must click in the drawing area.
- After this save the family.
