Why Sustainable Building Design is beneficial for Environment?

Sustainable building, also known as Green building, is an exclusive concept to construct buildings in eco-friendly ways. The key purpose behind the Green building concept is to utilize natural resources as well as other resources i.e. sunlight, air, energy, materials, heating and cooling system etc. in optimal ways. Hence, it plays a significant role in reducing maintenance costs as well as other additional costs for a building project. Nowadays, Green building concept is extensively used across the whole world for protecting environment.

Sustainable building design concept is applied to save the remaining natural resources and to minimize the usage of energy. Several external factors are taken in charge at the time the time of Green building development, some of them are:

  • Energy consumption: It is very necessary to determine how much energy will be consumed. To save our natural fuels and gases, we need to use other alternative options i.e. usage of solar energy, wind energy. We need to use proper insulation to reduce energy consumption, energy efficient lighting and other electronic appliances etc.
  • Ecological Balance: It is also inspected whether the designed building will be ecologically fitted or not.  At the time of Green building design, it is necessary to retain environmental balance i.e. we need to be very careful that any animal, plants and other ecological or living things should not be harmed. Along with all these above factors, we should also be careful in reducing environmental pollution as much as possible
  • Transport facilities: While developing designs for Sustainable buildings, it is also needed to consider the desired location of the planned building should have convenient connections to public transport routes, work places, hospitals, schools, colleges, shops etc. for accessing basic amenities
  • Water utilization: It is required to consider how to reuse rainwater, how to prevent flooding water, how to conserve surface water etc.
  • Materials usage: We need to use long-lasting materials to avoid the re-purchase cost of it. Materials should be reusable. We need to use those materials which will have very less impact on environment. We should buy materials from local areas to save transportation cost
  • Affordability consideration: It should be considered that after completion of the building, the maintenance cost should not be very high

With all these above factors, it is very crucial to be concerned about human health. So we should avoid toxic materials, room ventilation should be proper, enough daylight and air should pass across the building, drainage system should be proper that it should not spread any disease, waste products should be clean regularly etc.

BIM services play a big role in analyzing building sustainability. Sustainability optimization is considered as the sixth dimension of a 3D BIM building model.
