After writing a lot about a wide range of software products, which are used extensively by architects and engineers for developing high performing residential and commercial buildings – I now feel like writing about a company which has been accountable for producing many of them. Yes that is right, I am talking about none other than Autodesk, Inc., – an American software manufacturing company, which has produced a variety of high-end software products which are used by design and construction professionals.

Software products produced by Autodesk, Inc., are optimised by architects, engineers, drafters and modelers etc., for developing extensively comprehensive drawings, plans and models for architecture, structure and MEP.

History of Autodesk and its products

  1. The company which was founded in 1982 is headquartered in San Rafael, California and has its offices across the world.
  2. Autodesk was founded by John Walker, who was extensively involved in the development of AutoCAD – one of the most important software products ever produced by the company for the empowerment of AEC professionals.
  3. AutoCAD which was first released by Autodesk in December 1982 is a 2D and 3D computer-aided design software that’s used by AEC professionals for executing CAD drafting and Modeling services.
  4. Since the last 3D decades, this Autodesk product has been greatly  helping architects and engineers with high-end construction drawing and 3D models.
  5. In addition to AutoCAD, Autodesk is  also a proud owner of Autodesk Inventor,  Revit (Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP) and 3ds Max.
  6. If we talk about Autodesk Inventor, it is nothing but a computer-aided design software that is used extensively for developing 3D models and simulations.
  7. Autodesk Inventor gives tough competition to SolidWorks and Solid Edge.
  8. However, Autodesk Revit, which is designed for supporting Building Information Modeling is utilised extensively by architects, structural engineers and MEP engineers for developing high-end 3D parametric models.
  9. Multidisciplinary 3D, 4D, 5D and 6D parametric models, which are generated by using Revit can assist AEC professionals with extremely precise data and information on design, construction, operations, schedules, bill of materials, material takeoffs, time and cost of the project.

Apart from manufacturing advanced drafting and modeling applications Autodesk has also manufactured cutting-edge architectural rendering and 3D animation software 3ds Max, which helps in generating immensely photorealistic architectural images, walkthroughs and fly through.
